Elwood
I know it has been
a LONG time since I last wrote to you, but I just wanted you
to know that Elwood is alive and well here in South Park, PA.
He has matured into a lovable, well behaved gentleman.
He has been to a
number of obedience classes and is a pleasure to take on walks
either on the paths or through the woods in our nearby park.
He still drools profusely on car trips, but we have a liner
in the back of the wagon that can be hosed off when we get home.
Sometimes even Elwood needs to get hosed off! He does not seem
anxious and is eager to jump right in the car to go somewhere,
I think it is just the motion that gets to him.
I’ve attached
a picture from this past Halloween where he was dressed as “Batdog”.
He loves to have some type of clothing on him and actually has
a mini-wardrobe with a couple of sweaters, a raincoat, a couple
of scarves, and of course his bat cape. He seems embarrassed
when you remove his ‘clothes’.
|
|
I
just wanted you to know how much we continue to appreciate your
rescue efforts and the work you do for this breed. I think Elwood
is also thankful!
Regards,
Ted Nowlen |

"Heidi"
Successful
Placement
is a 7 1/2 year old
spayed female. Her owners were no longer able to keep her. She's
very gentle, sweet, and loves being right next to you ALL the
time! She is good with other dogs & children, is house trained,
comes when she is called, and does not jump up on people. She
is curious about cats but keeps her distance. When she was six
months old, she was hit by a car & had surgery on her right
rear leg. As a result she has some stiffness, but she gets around
just fine. She is playful & loves soccer balls. She is a
real dear and would be a wonderful companion, especially in
a home where she can stay close to people most of the time.

"Taylor
has had a very good year. I can't believe that
so much time has passed already. Initially he
was a little timid, but has progressed well. We
frequently visit a dog park near us where he has become much
better as socializing with other dogs. He definitely
has his quirks (like most 9 year old dogs, I guess).
He hasn't had any health problems and is really doing great.
He loves walks and chasing squirrels so we can't wait for
spring."

"Gunner
is everything we could wish for. He dances, he prances,
and he is happy to see us. He cuddles, he crawls under
the blankets, and is my constant companion when I'm home.
Yet he is no longer distressed when he is home alone.
No disturbing bad habits, he gets along with everyone who comes
into the house, fairly reliable about the tables, counters, and
garbage cans. He is trustworthy alone loose in the house.
The only problems we have are clipping his toenails and whining.
I wish I knew the command for "okay", there are times when he is
obviously waiting for permission, sitting at attention, alert to
your every move and softly whining. Even when you know
what he wants and it is "okay", he's seems to be waiting for that
magic word. He finally breaks and guiltily does it.
We were thrilled when we looked up his pedigree and found Broc Olca.
My parents and I were surprised when we were reading through the
"Versatile Vizsla" and spotted Broc, he was the spitting image of
our first vizsla, Copper. I guess we shouldn't have
been that surprised since Broc was her sire, we just never knew
the family resemblance was that strong. Knowing Copper and Gunner
were related makes him that much more special. (Though
I do realize a very large percentage of vizslas in this country
are probably also related)
Thank you for the opportunity of Gunner,"

- "Dibbs"
- Placed January 2001
- Successful
Placement
I adopted my dog Dibbs a year ago next week. In preparation I bought
the bowls, crate, food and even signed up for puppy manners lessons.
Driving home from the Magness' house I looked at my friend who went
with me to pick him up and said - What have I done? What do you do with
a dog? I was in utter amazement that I was now responsible for such
a fragile looking animal. We went to her house and she introduced her
dog to Dibbs who would not leave my side. We had pictures taken and
were generally fussed over. When I got us home we were too tired for
anything but bed. Day 1 was a success. The subsequent days were filled
with walks and errands - I took Dibbs everywhere with me in the car.
He made friends instantly with all who came to admire him. We found
every empty tennis court in the city to play in with a ball. The only
thing was that he seemed tired - I took him to the vet who instructed
me that dogs do require sleep and that they get it during the day -
I was exhausting my new dog! From then on I made sure that there was
balance - time for sleep, play, running and general snuggling. I first
took him to meet our horse with my fingers crossed. After soundly barking
at the horses, he settled in to being the farm star. He was mindful
about horses and even helped me teach a horse about circling on a long
line. Dibbs would fall into the circle and follow the horse - even doing
the walk trot and canter upon voice command. That first day I almost
fell over with surprise! It has been almost a year and Dibbs has seen
his crate leave, his dog bed settle onto the down couch and a permanent
bed go into backseat of the car. He is welcome to all our friends houses
and they fight over who gets him when we travel. He also went on a long
trip to NH to meet the future inlaws where he was an anchor of sanity
for 2 weeks while we spent quality time with 7 people. Walking him has
never been so sweet! He also got to see the beach - there is something
about getting him to the beach that was so important to me. He loved
it!
Dibbs
has taught me that even though sometimes dogs look fragile they are
amazing healers. He has also taught me to take care of myself - that
there are times to be part of the pack and times to pack it in and go
home. He also showed me that being an oppurtunist isn't all bad and
that when you are good you can claim the down couch for your very own.
Squirrels are meant for entertainment and sometimes dinner. Also that
you find love and fun in the most unexpected places. There was one defining
moment when I knew I was his and that was when I fell asleep on his
brand new LL Bean bed. I had stretched out to test its comfort and I
awoke to a face full of sleeping Vizsla. He always warms my heart and
I cannot imagine loving him more than I do now, yet, I say this every
day. That is why nothing could have prepared me for his arrival. Dibbs
has made me his person and found a way to wiggle past my heart and into
my soul.
I am
thankful for the rescue efforts that brought him to me.
