We
can have a test for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in Vizslas!
Scientists
from the Optigen company may be able to
start the process to identify a screening test for PRA. Optigen,
LLC, located in Ithaca, NY near Cornell University, has
developed DNA screening tests for PRA for several other breeds.
Seems there are enough Vizslas that have PRA, a test can now
be developed for us.
CERF
only identifies the dogs that have the disease, which is tip
of the iceberg. CERF cannot identify which dogs pass
the disease. For example, everyone knows Flick,
a MVVC dog, had PRA. He's only one dog, but there are at least
47 of his relatives (half of at least 94 relatives) in kennels
from Oklahoma to Connecticut that, if bred, will pass the
disease without showing any signs or symptoms of the disease
itself. Using a screening test to find out which dogs can
pass the disease will help breeders make more informed decisions.
The
genetics of PRA in Vizslas is recessive inheritance. The following
chart can be used to illustrate how the disease may be passed.

If
you have an affected dog or a relative of an affected dog,
all you need to do is submit your vizslas' blood sample, documentation
of the diagnosis, and 4-5 generation pedigree to Optigen.

If your dog is
deceased you have two options.
- Frozen seamen
may work instead of blood.
- If you have
blood stored with the Therion company working with
the Vizsla Club of American Welfare Foundation and the Magyar
Vizsla Society, you can request part of the sample be sent
to Optigen.

All
blood samples from affected dogs are FREE!

is requesting the VCA to help cover some of the other costs.

"Frankie"

was
always a fun-loving dog. She was a rule breaker and made
her own way. Our home is certainly quieter and less interesting
without her.
So....
No more counter surfing.
No more sneaking under the fence 5 minutes after she
goes out.
No more digging for chipmunks behind the woodpile.
No more snorting like a pig at her sister Sunny or mother
Lucie.
No more scratching my head while I'm sleeping when she
wants on the bed.
No more barking at the neighbors like she hasn't ever
seen them before.
No more sitting behind me on my computer chair with
her head on my shoulder.
No more rubbing her face on my leg.
No more pushing her way under the covers.
No more singing when she wants something to eat.
No more creeping up to the table and spinning to get
leftovers from Henry.
No more wrestling and zooming for Roady in the front
yard.
No more standing between me and the cabinets in the
kitchen leaning against my legs.
We'll
miss that crazy weirdo.

Liberty Starburst
"Star"
July 4, 1994 – November 6,
2006
We
lost a very wonderful dog Monday morning….she gave
us 12 years of exceptional love…..
I still remember
very vividly the day that Shirley Rothan and I drove to
Illinois to pick up our puppies. Shirley left with Bubba
who was that handsome little boy and I left with that sweet
quiet Star who beat up her brother all the way home and
became the "terror" of the Schaefer house. There
were days I thought we would never get her to settle down.
As the years
passed we found that Star only did things her way and we
just had to accept that! I had to accept the fact that she
liked to travel to shows but did not want to have anything
to do with being in the ring……she always placed
and received several reserves in her short show experience
but I finally had to give in to her demand that that was
not in her future. She had two litters and was the most
awesome mom. That definitely was her calling. She was truly
the matriarch in our house and always kept the rest of our
vizsla family in tow. When she thought things were getting
out of line, she would step in between and put a stop to
the rough housing of the other v's.
As Star got older
she always enjoyed escaping from the house and going to
the barn to find horse shoe hooves that were left laying
around. And, if we called her she just ignored us until
she was ready to come back.
We knew about
a month ago that Star would not be with us much longer……though
she never seemed to let anything stop her. I think she also
decided that she would leave us on her own terms. We stayed
up with her most of Sunday night and on Monday morning she
left peacefully after saying goodbye to all of us….she
obviously had decided that she would make the decision,
not us, on when she would leave us…..doing it her
way till the end….
Star will always
have a special place in our hearts….

and Trip

| As
always-Thanks to all who worked so very hard on events since the
last newsletter:
Because there was NOT
a quorum at the MVVC August 12 meeting (for neither the Board nor
the Membership) there was no official business done. There was no
quorum at the May Meeting (Fun Day). This means that NO OFFICIAL
business for the MVVC has happened in 2006. The Board did vote in
new members in June via mailed ballot.
At the August “non-meeting”
we did get volunteers to chair the Hunt Tests, and the three Field
Trials in 2007. EACH of the chairs will need help, so be prepared
to step up and give a hand when requested! MVVC CANNOT HOLD EVENTS
WITHOUT THE HELP OF EACH AND EVERY MEMBER!
Thank you to all who
voted in the MVVC election! The new slate of Officers and Board
will be working hard to make things happen-BUT you, the membership,
ARE the club. Without your efforts MVVC cannot function as a club.
The next meeting is the
January meeting at the Schaefer’s house.
- January 27-
- 1 PM board Meeting
- 3 PM General Membership
Meeting followed by food and raffle
Potluck Dinner:
- What to Bring:
- If your last name
begins with A-M bring a vegetable or salad
- If your last name
begins with N-Z bring a dessert or bread
- Meat supplied
by the Schaefer’s
Raffle:
- Bring something for
the Raffle – Proceeds go to the MVVC Rescue Fund.
What we need:
- Members to attend
the meetings so that there is a quorum!
- There is a need,
long overdue, to update the MVVC Constitution.
If you are interested in being on the revision committee, please
be prepared to volunteer when the agenda item comes up at the
January meeting. There will be two members from the board and
two members from the general membership. 99.9% of the discussion
can be via email. You will need to know how to use Microsoft Word,
and do attachments to emails. But, be prepared to meet in person
if the chair callas for the meeting during the revision process.
As soon as the committee is finalized, it will be up to the membership
to send the committee the things that they perceive need to be
considered. We know that the quorum is on the list, as is the
number and reason for regular meetings.
- Nominating Committee:
This committee will be an agenda item for the January Board of
Directors meeting. From the By-Laws:
No person may
be a candidate in a Club election who has not been nominated
in accordance with these by- laws. The President shall choose
a nominating committee before March 1st.
The committee shall consist of three (3) to five (5) members
in good standing and no more than one (1) of who shall be
a member of the current Board of Directors. The Secretary
shall immediately notify the committeemen and advise them
of their duties. The Chairman will be named by the President
and it shall be his duty to call a meeting, which shall be
held on or before the 30th of March.
Please advise me
if you are interested in being on the nominating committee.
The Election will be held in June.
Happy hunting, showing, competing or just being with your Vizsla!
