From the American Kennel Club
November 21, 2005
From John Rabidou
Director of Performance Events:

It has come to our attention that the intent or "spirit" of the use of tracking collars is being violated. Specifically, that the contestants are working their dogs in a foot handling call-back for kill and retrieve situation with a tracking collar on the dog. Clearly, there is little danger of the dog getting lost in a call-back situation, therefore the conclusion is that the tracking collar is being used a subtle means of control or intimidation. Wit this in mind, the AKC hereby informs all pointing breed clubs that tracking collars are not to be allowed on any dog in a foot handling call-back for kill and retrieve situations. If there was a call back in a run off situation where two or more dogs were run on a back course to determine a winner, a tracking collar would be allowed.

For further clarification, do not hesitate to contact this office or any AKC field representative.

Sincerely

John W. Rabidou

Shirley is in an extended care facility to treat a staph infection in her spine.

Paul has been hospitalized with diverticulitis.

THANKING MEMBERS FOR "GET-WELL" WISHES

Dear MVVC Folks,

I greatly appreciate all your cards and e-mails during my still lengthy recovery. Eight weeks without a red nose dog to hug was tough. It is great to finally be in my own home with my two old dogs. I have more healing to do before the youngsters can rejoin the family -- hopefully, later this year.

Thank you for remembering me during this trying time.

Some special moments in the show ring for Blitz this year were:

  • Best Opposite Sex in Puppy Sweeps at the VCGC Specialty in July,
  • Best of Winners both days at the Monroe Kennel Club show in September,
  • Four-point major win in Columbus at the Central Ohio Kennel Club show in November.

  • In between shows he tried his talents in the field and received several placements in Puppy and Derby stakes during the fall trial season.
  • Blitz also finished his Junior Hunter title in two, back-to-back weekends in November.

Thanks to Sue Branch for taking over showing Blitz and to Ed for getting back into the field again!!

CH Mar-Ed’s He Knoz the Web NA, NAJ
"Spyder"

In April Spyder double Q’d both days of the only agility trial we did this year -- with two 1st placements and two 2nd placements !!!!!! Spyder’s Jumper Q’s were obtained with his good friend, Joanne, handling him. They were fast courses and there was little chance that I could have kept up with him. In the Standard courses, after being sure that there were plenty of friends around to pick me up if needed and someone to call 911, I ran with Spyder. Wow, it was so good to be out there with him again. And, the most amazing thing happened - Spyder set his pace with my slower, not so

smooth running style. He was awesome!!! The AKC rep was very impressed by all the vizslas running that weekend. She made it a point both days to say how great the vizslas did and how much fun it was to watch them.

Spyder also had some nice wins at several specialties this summer.

  • MVVC Specialty in June he took 1st place in Stud Dog
  • Michigan Specialty he won Best inVeteran Sweeps
  • VCGC Specialty Spyder took
    • 1st place in Stud Dog
    • 1st place in Veteran Dog.

Another thank you to Sue for handling Spyder at these shows.

Passing of a True Friend

On November 28th I lost a very close friend. Paul Rothan informed us that he was taking

"Fox"
DC/AFC Fieldstone's Lord Fox of Lindn SH, VC

down to have him put to rest. Fox had been diagnosed with cancer and was rapidly losing the battle. Even as strong willed as Fox was, this was something that he could not overcome. Paul did the right thing by not
allowing Fox to suffer. He deserved more than that. Although I was not with Paul physically when this happened, I am sure that it affected him as much as it did me. Fox was definately Paul's buddy.

Fox was the type of dog that you either absolutely loved or hated. There was no middle of the road with Fox. It was either blue or nothing. Along with being the breeders of Fox, I have had the opportunity (thanks to

the Rothan's) to be able to train and handle him since he was a very young pup. Fox is the type of dog that you only get once in a career and you have to make the best of it.

During Fox's career, he had made a definate impact on this breeds' performance by raising the bar to a level that only a select few will ever reach. Although Fox never won the nationals (outright) I can't tell you the amount of times that he was a definate contender. From running in the derby stakes in Florida, to having to run him hard for an hour prior to running in the second series in Illinois to finding the unreachable interstate in Arizonia. It was also at the Arizonia nationals where the judge rode up to me and made the comment of, "What a nice dog. He is just TOO much dog for the nationals". I believe that this was the only nationals where he did not at least make the second series.

I want to thank everyone who handled Fox for the Rothan's. This was not an easy chore. I also want to thank everyone who scouted for Fox over the years. They and their horses both came back lathered up on more than one occassion. Fox was the type of dog that kept you on your toes and sitting high in the saddle at all times. What an incredible dog. Holly Hanna spent many hours trying to round Fox up down at Rend Lake while Paul hunted with Fox. He was doing exactly what he should have been doing, only it happened to be 6 or 7 fields away.

Fox not only left his mark on this breed, but also in my heart. I have never worked harder or was more pleased with any dog than I was with him. Fox only had one purpose in life and that was to find birds, lots and lots of birds. Although he was an awful nice house dog and companion too.

Again Paul and Shirley, thank you so much for allowing us to have so much fun with your boy. He will be remembered by many who had the opportunity to watch his show. He will never be held back anymore and will be able to finally run like he has wanted to for 8 years now. His course is now the universe, since he has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Enjoy Fox, my friend, you have definately earned it. "ATTTTTTTTA BOYYYYYYY". Rest in peace my friend.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

December 2005

This will be very short as I have little to talk about

First the news:

  • Elsewhere in this Issue is a letter from the AKC regarding use of tracking collars during call-backs. Please read it and pass the word to other Field Trialers.
  • Thanks:
Thanks to EVERONE that has worked at any event this past year. It does not matter how important or time consuming the job you did was, what is important is that you worked as a member of the club!

The club is a collection of individuals that have a variety of interest, a variety of personalities, and a variety of temperaments. The way that everyone on the grounds pulled together when Clara decided to go helicopter riding shows what the club is all about. Because I got a phone call and ran out, I was privileged to see the essence of the club and those at the grounds. Great work people.

Upcoming Events:

  • Christmas (New Year) party at the Schaefers –
    Saturday January 28

Be there or let me know if you are willing to chair, secretary, help at any of the following MVVC events.

  • April 8 & 9 MVVC Field Trial
  • May, 2006
    • TBD MVVC Fun Day
    • TBD MVVC Club Meeting
  • June 3 & 4 MVVC Hunt Test
  • June 17 & 18 MVVC Specialty
  • August, ? MVVC/VCGC Versatility
  • Sept 9 & 10 MVVC Walking Field Trial
  • Oct 14 & 15 MVVC Field Trial
  • Approx Oct 17-27 VCA National Events

I think I got all the dates right-if the corresponding date calendar is right…

Have a very safe and enjoyable Christmas, Holiday or vacation!

MVVC President
