MVVC Loses another friend in Wanda Berner

In every way that counted, Wanda Berner was rather like the Hungarian vizsla hunting dogs that she bred, trained and showed - strong and determined, with almost endless energy.

Both Berner and her dogs distinguished themselves in national competition. She had the only dual champion vizsla in Wisconsin. She is one of only five women in the country who have owned and handled a dual champion vizsla, in the field championship (a hunting competition on horseback) and as a show champion."

Wanda died of liver and bone cancer Aug. 6, at the family home in the Town of Ottawa, Wisconsin. She was 60 years old. She grew up in Pewaukee, Wisconsin and started to hunt with her father when she was just a little girl.

In 1969, the family got its first vizsla and Berner began raising the dogs. They later kept other breeds but returned to vizslas when her father wanted to get a hunting dog for his grandson. When an Illinois friend, Jim Busch, began telling Berner about field and hunting trials for the breed, noting that horses are used during hunting trials, the idea was just too irresistible for an animal lover like Wanda. That was in 1994. She began training and competing all over the country, acquiring her own tack and trailer and finally, a horse. Then came a camper and later, a huge motor home for long-haul trips.

The same was true of competing on the vizsla circuit. Wanda Berner became active with the Vizsla Club of America, serving on its national board of directors and in other roles. "It's a good ol' boy sport," said daughter Michel, who now runs the family dog business. "She didn't know better when she started. She didn't step on anyone's toes, but she just did it."

Her star dogs included a male named Maximum Strider - Max for short - who became a dual champion in show and field competitions. A female known as Gennie was another winner as a field champion and national Gun Dog of the Year for the breed.

Berner brought the same determination to fighting incurable cancer for more than a year, until she determined that it was time to stop fighting. She stopped eating and drinking, dying less than a week later. "She passed away at home," her husband said. "It was so . . . peaceful. We ended up with cats and dogs - and kids - and horses, pigs, chickens, guinea hens, you name it, because she wanted it all. It was a helluva ride, but it didn't last long enough."In addition to her husband and daughter, Berner is survived by son T.J. and an unofficially adopted son, Mike Neuens; brother Bill Smith and other relatives.

Wanda, we'll miss you. Members of MVVC

MVVC MEMBERS NEED GET WELL WISHES
Clara Kayser
Chris Freitag

Clara suffered a broken leg at the walking trial when she fell backwards off her horse and her horse rolled over on top of her. She had to be flown out by helicopter. We all wish her well.

Clara, you don't need to do that again just to get club members to work closer together!

Chris Freitag is suffering from an aggressive staff infection that has left her leg with six spots were she has lost the muscle tissue down to the bone. She almost lost her leg. She is staying a the home of friends who are changing her dressings twice daily. Her five dogs are being taken care of in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

FALL WALKING FIELD TRIAL

The following two statements are unsolicited comments from participants at the walking field trial.

Thanks for a great trial this weekend. We drove umpteen hours there, umpteen hours back, didn't win a damn thing - and we still had a great time!

Just wanted to say 'thanks' to all for making our first field trial experience a very positive one. It was great to see some excellent owner- trained dogs show their stuff! I am more confident in where I am in the training of my own dogs now, and in the direction I need to go from here.

The puppy course was very well planned in light of the warm weather. The creeks were placed right where they were needed for a quick cool off!

Thanks Clara & Theresa for your guidance & encouragement during my Hunting Dog brace. It was delightful to see Duncan & Teka take their ribbon.

The dinner was a lot of fun, as always it was enjoyable getting to know other MVVC members a little more - what a crew!

I look forward to participating in upcoming trials.

Theresa Miller and Jan Wallace have made an effort to create a walking field trial that is Amateur Friendly. This year, amateur handlers came from as far away as Florida and Iowa. We had beginners who had a nice introduction to field trials. They also developed a respect for horses in trials, thanks to Clara. We had plenty of help and, more important, a spirit of everyone supporting the beginners. It was like field trials used to be before professional handlers took up 70% of the entries.

We had 52 dogs, including irish setters, german shorthair pointers, english setters, and english pointers. Not only did Vizslas take all the placements, but several first-time-running dogs placed!!!!! Click on the images below

RESCUE CORNER

Rescue for OHIO

  • We are in need of a VCA coordinator for OH and WV. If you are interested in finding out more information about the position contact Pam at goosielu@wowway.com or 614-351-0242.
  • Currently we have a 3 yo female in need of a home without children. She was originally placed in her home through rescue as an 8 month old puppy. She is staying in her home until placement is possible. Please contact Pam if you would like more information or know of someone interested in a rescue dog.
  • I have been contacted by a teenage girl looking for a dog to co-own to show in Jrs, agility, obedience and possibly more. She does not want a puppy. Let me know if you have any adult dogs that get along well with dogs and kids that you would be interested in placing.

UCDX UAGII Louie's Reign of Terror CD RN JH NA OAJ
"Louie"

2005 has been a great year so far for Louie and me. All our training finally seems to becoming together and with a successful recovery from the surgery he had last year (removing scar tissue from a previous accident), so far completing six titles!

His first agility trial this year he finished his NA and NAJ titles and was extremely excited to be back doing agility. He has gone on to complete his OAJ title and a leg on his OA.

In UKC agility he completed his AGII title and collected some points towards that championship. On the obedience side of things he earned his RN and has a leg towards his RA, and finally finished his U-CDX. As my first competition and hunting dog I couldn't have asked for a better dog to help me learn. We're looking forward to more trials and hunting this fall.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

September 2005

I am in one state and most of my notes are in another (bad planning) so some detail may be left out of this issue.

First the news:

There was not a quorum at the August General Membership meeting held in conjunction with the Versatility Test at Denny Keeton’s.

The BoD met August 21 at Pam William’s, with the following ‘general’ decisions:

  1. A membership list would be crated to send information to all members of MVVC. This would be an announcement only list that did not accept emails from members, rather was a way for the Board to send out information quickly. This would also be a location to post information, files that were for members only. Al MVVC members were sent an invitation to join. If you did not receive one, please contact me (rtezell@gmail.com)
  2. Although the MVVC membership voted to join with the VC of Michigan to co-host the 2007 VCA Nationals, there was only one member who stepped forward to actually work. As a result, the Board voted to notify MVVC Members and VC of Michigan that we were unable to participate as a club. Ken was also offered the list of MVVC members to contact if he wanted help. As of the time of this article, Ken has not responded.

The Minutes of the May MVVC BoD meeting are now posted on the MVVC_List Yahoo Groups site. You must be a MVVC member to become a list member and access these files.

You should have received your new, well done and useful 2005 MVVC Membership Directory by now-please notify Clara Kayser if you have not.

Thanks:
To Denny and Linda Keeton for hosting and chairing the 2005 Versatility Test- They worked hard and held a successful (financially and participants) event-the report is on the MVVC_List under files.

To Jan Wallace, Clara Kayser and Theresa Miller for doing wonderful jobs as Chair and Secretaries for the Fall Walking Field Trial. It was a very successful event with some unexpected turns and events-Including Clara Kayser’s willingness to show the AKC representative our ability to handle an emergency including an air flight to get Clara to UC Medical Center. Clara’s horse went over backwards on her. She was home that night with nothing more than a body full of bruises and a broken bone in her leg. A special thanks to Denny Keeton who stepped in as Chair and Rob Webb who pulled his dogs from a class so that he could step in as judge for Dave.

Specialty:
Went wonderfully! We had great complements from participants and the Judges. There should be a financial report soon for all to check out. The committee is discussing next year’s issues as the entire show (all-breed) is growing and we ran into darkness issues that the club helped resolve with lights.

Upcoming Events:
Fall Riding Field Trial - October 15th & 16th – Linda Rogers Chair, Secretary
These key people need WORKERS! Please check with them and OFFER to help- we all have to work together to make the MVVC events successful! The premium may be up on the web site any day. Watch for more information.
